Greg's Research

My main research interest is in sixteenth century biblical translations and exegesis. I defended my doctoral dissertation in June 2008 at the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic University of Louvain (K.U.Leuven) (94% corresponding to summa cum laude with with congratulations of the board of examiners). My Ph.D. studies the Tyndale-Joye debate on "Translating Resurrection." The directors of my thesis were Prof. Dr. Reimund Bieringer (K.U.Leuven) and Prof. Dr. Guido Latré (UCL).
Here is an abstract of my dissertation and the annexed theses.

Between 1999 and 2004 I collaborated with Dr. Paul Arblaster in the multidisciplinary K.U.Leuven project on Vernacular Bibles Printed in Antwerp (1526-1535), under the supervision of Dr. Guido Latré. Besides partial translations in English (by William Tyndale and George Joye), Dutch, French and Danish, these vernacular bible translations include the first complete English, Dutch and French Bibles ever in print, being the Coverdale Bible (Antwerp, Merten De Keyser, 1530), the Liesvelt Bijbel (Antwerp, Jacob van Liesvelt, 1526) and the Bible de Lefèvre d'Étaples (Antwerp, Merten De Keyser, 1530) respectively. We studied inter alia Antwerp's unique role in these publications, their interrelatedness, origin, theological background, paratextual elements, and translation strategies and techniques.

In the framework of this project, I co-organized a major Exhibition at the Plantin-Moretus Museum (Antwerp) with the title Tyndale’s Testament. I also co-edited the catalogue for the exhibition and contributed several entries and an article in that catalogue.

Other areas of research interest include: biblical hermeneutics, biblical eschatology, biblical anthropology (monism versus dualism), Pauline post-mortem theology, reformation theology, ecumenical relations (especially the Anglican-Roman Catholic Dialogue, the documents of ARCIC I and ARCIC II) biblical translations and translation studies.

I have published in English, Hungarian and Dutch.
